Mysore Ashtanga: A Practice for Everyone
At Antwerp Yoga, one of the most treasured practices we offer is Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga. It's my favorite style, which is why my first article for Antwerp Yoga is about the Mysore program. This traditional and individualized approach allows you to build a yoga practice that evolves with you. Rooted in a strong lineage, it keeps us close to the authentic teachings while giving space for personal growth. The best part? Mysore is for everyone! Yes, even if you're an absolute beginner.
Mysore-style Ashtanga is a self-paced practice within a group setting. Unlike led classes where a teacher calls out every movement, in a Mysore class, you follow a set sequence of postures at your own rhythm, with the guidance and support of an experienced teacher. This method originates from the city of Mysore, India, where it was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
At Antwerp Yoga, we honor this traditional approach. Whether you’re new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, Mysore-style allows you to build a sustainable, personal practice. The teacher moves around the room, giving hands-on adjustments and assists, personalized feedback, and helping students deepen their understanding; both physically and mentally.
A common misconception is that Ashtanga Mysore is only for advanced students. In reality, it’s for everyone.
- Beginners: If you’re new to yoga, Mysore is an ideal way to start. You learn the sequence posture by posture, receiving one-on-one attention from the teacher. No need to remember everything at once, you build your practice gradually, at your own pace.
- Experienced Yogis: If you already have a yoga background, Mysore gives you the space to refine your practice, work on specific challenges, and develop a deeper connection with your breath and movement.
- People with injuries or limitations: Because of the individualized approach, the teacher can modify postures to suit your needs, ensuring a safe and sustainable practice.
At Antwerp Yoga, we see students of all ages and backgrounds stepping onto their mats in Mysore classes. There’s no pressure to “perform.” The goal is steady progress and inner exploration.
Practicing at Antwerp Yoga means stepping into a space that values authenticity, tradition, and community. Here’s why our Mysore program stands out:
In the beginning, your practice will be short and manageable. It also works with memory, you'll gradually learn the sequence rather than having to remember everything at once. Don't expect it to be like a 90-minute led class; Mysore practice grows over time as you become more familiar with it.
- Arrive early (7:30AM the latest) and introduce yourself to the teacher. Don't just roll out your mat. :)
- No need to memorize the sequence; the teacher will guide you step by step.
- Bring an open mind. You don’t need to be flexible or strong, just willing to learn.
- Stay consistent. The beauty of Mysore practice unfolds over time.
Mysore Ashtanga is more than just a style of yoga, it’s a lifelong practice that teaches patience, resilience, and self-discovery. And Antwerp Yoga is the perfect place to begin or deepen your journey.
I hope you're feeling inspired to explore Mysore-style Ashtanga and see how it can support you on and off the mat. Join our Mysore program at Antwerp Yoga and experience this transformative practice for yourself.
See you in the shala!
